About Me

Hello!

I am a Chicago-based Taiwanese-American designer from California, currently in the Master of Design Graphic Design program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Through my undergraduate degree in Asian Studies, with minors in Japanese, Korean, and Fashion Design, I have been exposed to and learned from a variety of people, cultures, and ways of thinking. My background in Asian culture, history, and language pushed me to find deeper ways design could potentially fit into the world and ways I could interact with design. Combined with my previous work as a teacher in South Korea, where my methods were centered on learning by doing, such as implementing games into my lesson plans to foster team-building and encourage students to practice English in a low-pressure, fun environment, I now find myself drawn back to this methodology in my design projects – the desire to foster critical thinking and new perceptions in my audience through interactive methods.

I believe learning can be fun and that it never really ends, so in my design practice I aim to inspire my audience to continue thinking, learning, and engaging with the world in new ways, starting with perspectives that may subvert typical norms or ideas. I am compelled to incorporate my experiences into my design work through designing full-body immersive experiences that encourage tactile, mental, and emotional exploration by provoking new perceptions and thoughts in my audience, regardless of whether they reach the same conclusions as I do.

I love traveling to both new and familiar places, learning about other cultures and people, and drawing on my experiences as inspiration in my design work. I also enjoy experimenting with various print and digital media, often learning new skills to execute my projects.

Best,

Selene Huang
